Springtime is a great time to give your home a good clean, but your kitchen is a room that needs extra attention. Since you use your kitchen so often and it is where you prepare food, it’s crucial to clean every spot- even the hard-to-reach areas. Continue reading for a few tips on how to deep clean your entire kitchen for a healthy and safe home.
If you are feeling overwhelmed with cleaning your kitchen, a good place to start is by de-cluttering items that don’t belong there or that you have no use for. We often hold on to things we no longer need, so think about how often you use old appliances, broken utensils, or if you simply have too many cups or bowls. Either throw it away or start a donations pile for things that are in good shape but you do not wish to keep. Also, take this time to go through your pantry and get rid of expired food. This is an important step as you not only get rid of things you don’t need, but it is easier to clean a kitchen when it isn’t so cluttered!
When wiping down your cabinets and shelves, it’s important to remove everything rather than just cleaning around the items. Wipe down your shelves with a multipurpose cleaner and clean up any debris or crumbs. Once everything is nice and clean, you can rearrange your storage areas to make your kitchen more efficient, based on the ingredients and appliances you use most often.
Don’t forget about cleaning your light fixtures, as they can accumulate a lot of dust. Turn off the lights before cleaning, then dust the fan blades on your ceiling fan or dust the light bulbs with a dry cloth. This process shouldn’t take long, but it’s important for creating a dust-free kitchen.
Now for the biggest cleaning job in the kitchen- the large appliances. No one likes going through their fridge or cleaning their oven, but it is always worth it in the end to have spotless appliances. If you have a self-cleaning oven, start the cycle and clean your fridge as it is working. If not, unplug your stove, take out the shelves, and spray oven cleaner inside and on the door, and keep the kitchen well-ventilated. Scrub the top and insides of the oven with a sponge, then wipe it down with clean water.
It’s best to clean your fridge at the same time to save some time and energy. Unplug your fridge and remove everything from the fridge and freezer to get a clean slate. Get rid of any items that have gone bad or you won’t eat, and keep perishable items in a cooler while you clean the inside.
